In 1940, Diego Rivera painted "Pan American Unity" (Unidad panamericana) for the Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco. This mural was the last piece of public art created by the Mexican artist in the United States. Today, thanks to City College of San Francisco, "Pan American Unity" is a multimedia travelling exhibit which brings the beauty and intricacies of this masterpiece to a wider American audience.

In Other Words...Inc. created the Spanish version of the commentary for this exhibit. We include here the section on fresco technique.

Fresco Technique

Fresco is an ancient technique of wall painting involving the application of earth color pigments to wet plaster. Diego Rivera's frescos combine the techniques of the Italian Renaissance and the pigments and styles of indigenous Mexican folk art.

El fresco es una técnica antigua de pintar sobre muros o paredes, basada en la aplicación de pigmentos de origen mineral a una capa húmeda de enlucido. Los frescos de Diego Rivera combinan las técnicas del Renacimiento italiano con los pigmentos y estilos del arte folclórico indígena de México.
